Understanding Your Credit Score

A credit report determines the creditworthiness of a person, and helps lenders determine who qualifies for a loan.

Photo22-MauiMost lenders, such as banks and credit card companies, use credit scores to determine creditworthiness.

A credit score is primarily based on a credit report developed by the credit reporting agencies: Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. A credit report determines the creditworthiness of a person and helps lenders determine who qualifies for a loan, at what interest rate, and with what credit limits.

Credit scores range from 300 to 850, and are calculated by a mathematical equation that evaluates many types of information from an individual’s credit report. A high credit score represents good credit.
